There are 2 types of knitting:  Continental and English.  You’ll be learning the Continental method.
 
Basic Knitting Terms
You can knit a scarf of any width and length using just these basics.

Cast-on (c/o)
Knit (k)
Purl (p)
Bind-off (b/o)
Right side (rs) (refers to knitted fabric)
Wrong side (ws) (refers to knitted fabric)
Garter stitch (g st) – all rows knit.  In the case of the garter stitch, the rs and ws of the knitted fabric will be the same.
Stockinette stitch (St st) – rs rows knit, ws rows purled.  Stockinette is the most common stitch pattern, however it will result in the edges of your knitted fabric curling, so keep this in mind when choosing it for a scarf and some other projects.  In the case of stockinette
Weave-in ends
 
Very Basic Square Pattern
c/o 20
K 20 rows (g st)
b/o all stitches
Finishing:  weave in ends
 
Explanation of pattern:
1)      Cast on 20 stitches onto your needle.
2)      Knit every row for 20 rows, which creates the “garter” stitch pattern.
3)      Bind off all 20 stitches and cut your yarn.
4)      Weave in ends
 
Very Basic Scarf Pattern
c/o 20
K all rows until pattern reaches 50 inches (or desired length) (g st)
b/o all stitches
Finishing:  weave in ends

Explanation of pattern:
1)      Cast on 20 stitches
2)      Knit every row until scarf measures 50 inches (or desired length) in garter stitch
3)      Bind off all 30 stitches and cut your yarn
4)      Weave in ends
